Hardware Engineering Manager

Overview of Position

We are a property technology (Proptech) startup that is looking to add a passionate and self driven team member to expand our growing and fast-paced Engineering department. We develop software and hardware to enable people to open and manage doors from their smartphones. Our solutions are currently being used by more than 5,000 properties including the largest and most trusted names in multifamily and commercial real estate.

ButterflyMX is looking for a Systems Engineer to join our team that focuses on building world class products. You must work collaboratively as part of an agile team to help deliver end-to-end products and features, seeing them through from conception to delivery, lead by example for other members of the team as a dedicated, passionate, and flexible technologist who is constantly looking for the ideal solution to a problem, and have a strong analytical, detail-oriented mindset. This position will be a member of the ButterflyMX Engineering team, reporting directly to the VP of Hardware Engineering.


Irvine, CA or Remote


  • Work with our product team to translate market requirements into product requirements
  • Work with product, marketing, sales and finance teams to build holistic product requirement sets to include physical, functional, reliability, resiliency, environmental, etc
  • Support our product team in defining the industrial design, look and feel of our physical products
  • Ensure adequate verification and validation test coverage for all new products
  • Provide cross-functional product expertise for all company constituents
  • Ensure the accuracy and availability of full product documentation
  • Manage and lead an agile team of hardware engineers
  • Spend approximately 50% of your time managing/leading/strategizing/planning and 50% of your time engineering
  • Work with QA teams to ensure adequate verification and validation test coverage
  • Provide leadership and guidance on sustaining engineering efforts to combat parts obsolescence
  • Own the coordination between in-house Engineering and supplier/partner Engineering and design efforts
  • Lead and guide sustaining engineering efforts to combat parts obsolescence
  • Be a cross-functional team leader for reliability and resiliency investigations, both within the company and in the field


  • 2+ years leading an integrated Electrical and Mechanical Engineering team
  • 5+ years experience in systems engineering or integrated electronic hardware/software engineering projects
  • Ready, willing and able to get your hands dirty as an individual contributor
  • Experience with the common challenges and interdependencies in embedded systems and the development of custom hardware
  • Solid fundamental understanding of mechanical, electronic and software feature definition
  • Solid fundamental understanding of mechanical, electronic and software feature definition
  • Demonstrated success in translation of market requirements to product requirements
  • Demonstrated success in requirements decomposition and V&V test execution in a mixed hardware/software scope
  • Demonstrated success in assessing and selecting hardware/software implementation options in an integrated product development
  • Experience working in fast-paced, collaborative product development environments
